Facts of Life in Seattle

The activity options are few for one staying under the covers due to the cold and damp. However, blogging is on the list. I am calculating the cost of staying warm and functional in our older, all-electric, non-centrally heated Seattle home.

Number of heaters needed to be operational in order to walk freely around the house: 5

Number of watts per heater; kilowatt hours per heater per hour: 1500; 1.5 kwh

Number of hours up and moving: varies- avg. 12

Cost per kilowatt hour: avg. $.08.

Daytime cost to heat the house: 5 x 1.5 x 12 x $.08= $7.20

Cost for nighttime heating (2 heaters- the bedroom and the central living area to maintain heat accrued during the day): $2.88.

Daily cost of caffeine and prescribed narcotics to make movement throughout the house possible: $3.00

Total cost per day to stay function (exclusive of food, etc.): $13.08.
